Best Camping Beds and Chairs for Heavy People
I don't go around publicizing my weight often, but since this segment of my blog is created especially for heavy people who want to be comfortable sleeping in tents and sitting on camp furniture, I'll tell you the secret I hide from just about everyone else in life. I stand about 5 foot 7 inches tall and weigh approximately 215 pounds. My husband stands about 6 feet tall. His weight tends to fluctuate between 315 and 325 pounds. When we shop for items like folding beds, air mattresses and camp chairs, a little time and research is required to acquire the tools necessary to be comfortable on our camping vacations. Despite his bad back and my bad hips, we've finally perfected the camp game!

1. This locking chair never sags or tips, and it's rated for 400 pounds
I waited a year to review this chair because I wanted to be certain that it would hold up through several backyard barbecues and many trips to the park. It has far exceeded my expectations. Camp chairs are known for saggy seats and the tendency to tip or wobble. With heavy duty steel construction, this camping chair locks into place and supports up to 400 pounds. Even if you weigh far less, a chair's maximum capacity indicates how long it will last and how well it will withstand abuse from relatives who like to plop into chairs. Tip: Different vendors sell this chair, and not all versions of this chair are rated for 400 pounds. Be sure to check the weight rating before you buy. This picture links to the vendor that includes options for heavy duty models.

2. Big butts feel better with nice cushions!
No matter how thin or heavy you are, sitting around a campfire all night can put undue pressure on your rump and contribute to lower back pain. This is especially true if you're heavy with preexisting back problems. I ordered two top rated cushions on Amazon because I wasn't sure which one would meet my needs. After a year of using them, here are my findings:

3. My favorite portable bed for summer stays cool all night long
I waited a year to review this mattress because I wanted to see how it would stand up to a few camping trips and several visits from overnight guests.

For a luxurious sleep experience that feels like home, go for a quality tri folding foam mattress by Milliard! I currently own two air beds, three folding mattresses and two quality camp pads. Yes, I've spent a fortune getting it right! The Milliard is simply the most comfortable foam mattress available, but be sure to choose the appropriate size. The twin size will be too large for small tents and too bulky to transport in an average sized car. The single size is perfect for camping, even if you're a tall or heavy person.

5. Get a REAL folding bed, not a camp cot.
When you get down to reading reviews, you'll find that some of the most expensive camp cots are collapsing in the middle of the night, even the ones rated for 400 pounds and even when used by 250 pound people. This $50 folding bed is rated for 1,200 pounds. No matter how heavy or thin you are, you'll get a more durable product for half the price, and it won't weight a whole lot more than a camp cot. Sometimes, merchandise made specifically for camping isn't the best merchandise. It takes a solid product with 20,000 favorable reviews to show the real merits of choosing traditional frames over camp cots that aren't designed to be used 365 days a year.

6. You can lay a thin air bed over a folding foam bed
7. Zero gravity chairs for folks who have back problems
8. The best wilderness toilet is a folding handicapped commode
If squatting over a bucket isn't your idea of a comfortable bathroom experience, you'll love this extra durable handicapped toilet that's rated for 650 pounds. Even if you don't intend to put that much weight on it, a higher weight rating translates to greater durability over time, especially if you have a large family with multiple users and abusers! Older campers with sore knees will appreciate the opportunity to sit comfortably with no worries about tipping. Use this toilet with the included commode bucket or place the toilet over a hole in the ground. For large families, dig a latrine and move the chair along the channel with each new use. Features: 1.) Large and durable 14 x 17 inch deep seat with lid. 2.) Padded armrests 3.) 12-qt. commode bucket with carry handle, cover and splash shield. 4.) Measures 33 1/2" w. at the base. 5) Assembles in 3 easy steps with no tools.

9. This kitty litter absorbs and controls odors like no other!
I first learned about this blockbuster organic product in an editor's choice review published by USA Today. The deal is that it controls odor better than chemicals without the negative health effects. It's a great way to save money versus buying expensive commode liners filled with harmful chemical clumping materials. This clay cat litter is uniquely formulated combining heavy non tracking granules with medium grain. The result is an excellent clumping litter that prevents moisture from reaching the bottom of the litter box while providing a clump that will not break apart. SOME TIPS: I prefer to use small garbage bags as commode liners because they're less expensive. If you run out of commode liners on a long wilderness trip, you can remove the waste bucket and position your toilet over a hole in the ground. Scoop kitty litter over your waste each time you eliminate. This will prevent odors from attracting bugs. At the end of your trip, simply fill the hole with dirt to hide your mess. No harm done. It's all biodegradable! If find that this system is quite sanitary and definitely less stinky than using a cheap bucket style camp toilet.
