Tetsubin Cooking: How to SAFELY heat water and soup Inside a Tent; Recipes and Methods for cooking with a Tetsubin
I'm so excited! I've learned how to safely boil water and cook food inside my screen tent WITHOUT a power station, electric kettle or propane stove. This little cast iron contraption is called a tetsubin (teapot warmer). I feel like a child playing house when I make tea or use my mini skillet to fry ham and eggs for my husband. This blog celebrates the little contraptions I use to play house in my tent and highlights the special little recipes I can make without wood, charcoal, propane or canned fuel.

Be sure to use four tealights, and be sure to elevate them.
I use a to elevate my pot warmer above the table.
My mini tea kettle holds four cups (32 Ounces)
My mini pot holds 2 cups (16 ounces)
My mini pan will fry ham, eggs and more
I use extra long burning tealights
My favorite foods to cook on the tetsubin
Lean beef sizzlers instead of hamburgers
A lean beef sizzler is ideal for cooking over a tetsubin, as thick hamburger patties would create too much grease splatter and take forever to get done. Stehouwer's beef patties create no grease at all, so you'll have to add a teaspoon of oil to get the job done without sticking.I serve my beef patties on onion rolls with A1 steak sauce.

Shaved steak with stir fry veggies
Traditional steak is difficult to cook with a tetsubin, but shaved steak is just perfect. I'm not into slicing and dicing at camp, so I generally slip a bag of frozen stir fry veggies into my cooler. To accomplish this meal, I use two candle warmers side by side and top them with metal or cast iron mini pans. One pan is used to cook two cups of meat. The other is used to cook about two cups of veggies. A teaspoon of oil will suffice for both pans. When the veggies are good and hot, I cover them with honey balsamic dressing. Same goes for the meat. Adding the dressing sooner would prevent the meat and veggies from browning. When the meal is nice and hot, I spoon even amounts of meat and veggies onto serving plates and top with french onion crisps.

Tuna casserole, easy camp style
Chicken
Ham and Eggs
Bacon is too greasy for tetsubin cooking, but ham is perfect!
This is what I do when my campsite has electricity
Life is a lot easier at campgrounds. I simply pull out an electric skillet and cook a whole package of meat and veggies at once!

This is how I cook outside
I recently grew tired of lugging bulky grills to camp, so I invested in a small notebook grill. It's a wonderful convenience.
